On Dec. 30, 1899, her son James Glenn Rice wrote to Uncle Coleman, " Spent Christmas day with dear parents in Union. Found them in better health and spirits than expected. Pa seems fat, hopeful and cheerful as his good nature always permits. Ma, the dear soul, seems to take life quietly and contentedly and reminds me of dear Grandma Carlisle." Mary died 5 months later.
